This is a collection of previously uncollected film criticism by the late Stanley Kauffmann (1916-2013). Kauffmann’s creative life spanned seven decades: starting in 1958 and continuing until 2013, he was a film and theater critic for The New Republic, The New York Times, and Saturday Review, among other publications. He was also an actor, stage manager, playwright, novelist, professor, and editor. Along with Dwight Macdonald, Andrew Sarris, Pauline Kael, and John Simon, Kauffmann was one of the most potent, influential critics included in the New York school of twentieth-century American criticism. The Los Angeles Times once called him “the Dean Swift of our country’s criticism,” and Susan Sontag proclaimed him “one of our national treasures.”

With style and erudition Kauffmann discusses films from the following countries in Outtakes: Cuba, United States, Spain, France, Italy, New Zealand, Germany, Finland, England, Argentina, Burkina Faso, India, Brazil, Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Poland, South Africa, Hungary, and Japan. Among the artists treated are Jean-Luc Godard, Orson Welles, Werner Herzog, Yasujiro Ozu, and David Lean. Among the motion pictures reviewed are Take the Money and Run, Murmur of the Heart, Black Orpheus, Mr. Arkadin, City of Women, Wings of Desire, Dead Poets Society, Days and Nights in the Forest, and An Angel at My Table. These movie reviews were selected from six decades (1950s-2000s) of Kauffmann’s career on the basis of their subjects’ international as well as national (American) representativeness, and with the idea in mind of creating a balance between prominent film directors and those less prominent or relatively early in their careers.
