This is a collection of previously uncollected film criticism by the late Stanley Kauffmann (1916-2013). Kauffmann’s creative life spanned seven decades: starting in 1958 and continuing until 2013, he was a film and drama critic for The New Republic, The New York Times, and Saturday Review, among other publications. He was also an actor, stage manager, playwright, novelist, professor, and editor. Along with Dwight Macdonald, Andrew Sarris, Pauline Kael, and John Simon, Kauffmann was one of the potent, influential critics included in the New York school of twentieth-century American criticism. The Los Angeles Times once called him “the Dean Swift of our country’s criticism,” and Susan Sontag proclaimed him “one of our national treasures.”

With style and erudition Kauffmann discusses films from the following countries in Master Print: South Korea, Lebanon, Italy, Iran, France, Germany, China, Austria, England, Czech Republic, Slovakia, United States, Norway, Chile, Russia, Japan, Canada, Denmark, Belgium, Viet Nam, Poland, Chad, Thailand, Argentina, Australia, Sweden, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, India, Romania, Mongolia, Taiwan, Bosnia Herzegovina, Spain, China, South Africa, Palestine, New Zealand, Senegal, and Greece. Among the films reviewed are David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive; Robert Altman’s Gosford Park; Alexander Sokurov’s Russian Ark; Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report; Alexander Payne’s About Schmidt; Lars von Trier’s Dogville; Hany Abu-Assad’s Paradise Now; Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York; Xavier Beauvois’s Of Gods and Men; Michael Haneke’s Caché (Hidden); Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River; Pedro Almodóvar’s Volver; Nanni Moretti’s We Have a Pope; and Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
